Campus Cases Rising, Mayhem in March

As we draw to the end of this week, I’m sure we are all hoping is the last cold and cloudy spell of spring 2021. Bring on the sunshine, heat, and foliage!

Still, we hope the changing weather doesn’t inspire a change in attitude towards COVID safety protocols. From what we understand, the rate of new infections on Cornell’s campus is the highest it’s been since the start of the pandemic, and, among these new infections, new varients to Tompkins county have been detected. With hopes of being vaccinated soon, it’s easy to become complacent, but it would be a shame to falter now when we’re so close to the finish line! So please enjoy the weather, but please do so as safely as possible.

This time of year brings us our first taste of springtime, but also, arguably, the greatest sports event of the year. Yes, whatever you would like to call it, March Madness, The Big Dance, or The NCAA Men’s Division I Basket Ball Tournament, it started up this past weekend and I’m sure many of the tenants in our Cornell student rentals had their eyes glued to the screen. Upsets, brackets, basketball from noon each day to around 10 pm; this first weekend of the tournament is always the most engaging. If you want to, you really could watch all day long, moving from one nail-biter game to the next, watching upsets and, eventually, figuratively or literally destroying your bracket in rage. As demoralizing as it can be, going without this tournament was certainly difficult last year!

Perhaps attentiveness to The Big Dance among Cornell students is down this year, as Cornell is not participating in the tournament. I’m not sure how long it’s been since they were last invited to the tournament, but over ten years ago now, the Cornell men’s basketball team had a pretty amazing few years, with multiple Ivy League championships, and a few appearances in March Madness. One such appearance saw the Big Red making it to the Sweet Sixteen and facing off against the number one overall seed Kentucky featuring now-NBA-superstars John Wall and Demarcus Cousins.

Cornell came into the tournament seeded 12th in their region, meaning they were around the 48th best team overall and, to make it to the Sweet Sixteen, they had to beat two higher-seeded teams. The first was 5th seeded Temple, who Cornell beat easily, for their first win in program history. The second was the powerhouse school Wisconsin, seeded 4th, a game which Cornell dominated, winning by almost 20 points.

Cornell’s Sweet Sixteen game, by chance, was held at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York. Being only about an hour’s drive from Ithaca, it allowed quite a few local and student fans to come support.

It was a great time to go to Cornell and care about basketball, just like right now is a great time to find a student rental in ithaca. Whether you’re looking for a one-bedroom, a two-bedroom, even up to an eight-bedroom, we’ve got you covered! Please contact us if you’re looking for housing for the 21-22 academic year!
